nifty green arrowHMMM:  75 Skills Every Man Should Master
 Talk Back (1 comment)»  |  Thursday, 5/8/2008 around 11PM EST by John  |  permalink
Yes, lists like these are often padded with unfunny or tedious items. I actually found Esquire's 75 Skills Every Man Should Master entertaining and interesting enough to read through to the end. Perhaps you will also enjoy it.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Consumer Spending and Inflation Pie Chart
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Monday, 5/5/2008 around 6PM EST by John  |  permalink
All we hear on the news is rumblings about gas prices and inflation. Want to see a neat little breakdown of the what the average American consumer buys and how prices on those categories have fared versus one year ago? Check out this neat Consumer Spending and Inflation Pie Chart. Eggs have rocketed up 30% and bananas are up 15%. How about dental services and plane tickets?

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Knuckle Tattoo Gallery
 Talk Back (1 comment)»  |  Sunday, 3/30/2008 around 1PM EST by John  |  permalink
This site has been collecting pictures of knuckle tattoos, often with a few words from the owners. I've always thought you had to have a perfect mix of dedication and crazy in you to get a knuckle tattoo. It's a neat view into that world.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Grey Squares Optical Illusion
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Saturday, 2/9/2008 around 2PM EST by John  |  permalink
Simple yet amazing. Check out this grey squares optical illusion by Edward H. Adelson.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Underground Temple in Italy Made Public
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Sunday, 11/25/2007 around 5PM EST by John  |  permalink
One day some guy has a vision to start digging under his house. With a little help and 16 years of work, they carved out and built a secret underground temple. Check out the pictures on this one - the level of artistic detail is incredible.

Have you ever seen graffiti walk around on the walls? Check out this great Moving Time-Lapse Graffiti Video

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Double-Jaw Eel (Video)
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Saturday, 9/8/2007 around 12AM EST by John  |  permalink
This species of eel has two jaws, one of which extends from its throat to snatch at captured prey. It's a bit like the movie "Aliens." There was an article with more info, but watching this ten second video is all you really need to see.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Skateboarder Falls Forty Feet From Ramp
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Monday, 8/6/2007 around 9AM EST by John  |  permalink
I caught this on a muted restaurant TV this weekend. If you haven't seen it, check out Jake Brown's fall during the X Games. He was out with a cane later, so somehow he's mostly okay.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Spinning Dancer Illusion
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Monday, 7/23/2007 around 8PM EST by John  |  permalink
This Spinning Dancer Illusion didn't work until I read the instructions - something you can usually skip over with optical illusions. But once I started looking at the shadow, the direction switched. Neat.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Charlie Chaplin Mask Illusion
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Saturday, 7/7/2007 around 10PM EST by John  |  permalink
Check out the video of the Charlie Chaplin Mask Illusion. The window video is also neat, but the face crate was kinda boring.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy Played on Theremin
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Monday, 6/25/2007 around 9AM EST by John  |  permalink
First off, what's a Theremin? Apparently it's the name for one of those wacky sound instruments that is played by wiggling your hands in the air near pickup antennas. This guy is mighty good at using one to play the vocals on Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  What the World Eats
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Saturday, 6/9/2007 around 2PM EST by John  |  permalink
What the World Eats
Here's a neat photo essay on what families around the world eat. They track their meals for a week, then re-buy all the food and put it alongside the family in their kitchen. Sixteen images in all.

If you want to see/read more, it looks like this gallery is a snip from this larger Hungry Planet: What the World Eats book.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Living Goldfish In a Japanese Deep Fryer
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Thursday, 3/29/2007 around 8PM EST by John  |  permalink
No, this isn't some jerk frying up live goldfish. It is goldfish living in a water layer below a functioning deep fat fryer. The little bits of breadcrumbs fall down and feed the fish, at the same time keeping the fryer clean. Very cool.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Fantastic Beatboxing
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Thursday, 3/15/2007 around 10PM EST by John  |  permalink
Check out this guy from the 2006 French Beatboxing Championship. I think part of what makes him so amazing is his level of detail for all the little background sounds that occur in a natural drum beat, not just the initial hit on a kick or snare. Here's the part two video, in case you don't see it linked from the first Youtube page. Do you think they added a little reverb to his mic?

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Hallucinate Without Drugs
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Sunday, 3/11/2007 around 9PM EST by John  |  permalink
Wow, this is crazy. Open up this Strobe animation and stare at it for 20 or so seconds. Then turn and look around the room, or at another web page.

Oh, and I promise this is not some shock fakeout trick. Just a neat visual effect with your eyeballs.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Creepy Photo Retouching Gallery
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Tuesday, 3/6/2007 around 9PM EST by John  |  permalink
Check out this gallery of somewhat Creepy Photo Retouching. Hover your mouse over the big image to see the non-retouched original version. I know some people that are extremely talented retouchers and it's a skill I certainly don't have!

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Marselles Wallace Scene Set in Typeface

Assuming you're not at work and don't mind some audio and text-based cursing, check out this video of the Marselles Wallace scene from Pulp Fiction set in typeface. Neat effect.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  DialIdol American Idol Elimination Predictions
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Tuesday, 2/20/2007 around 11PM EST by John  |  permalink
I'm not a big American Idol fanboy, but I usually hear/see most of it while my wife watches it on TiVo. She pointed out this Dial Idol site, which attempts to predict the voting results based on how often the various voting phone numbers are busy during the few hours of voting each night. Neat idea. I've been refreshing the page a few times and it appears to update very quickly. I'm a sucker for live stats - just wait until baseball season starts!

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Pilot, Passengers Foil Hijacking Attempt
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Saturday, 2/17/2007 around 12AM EST by John  |  permalink
Worth the quick read if only for the next move made by the flight attendants after the guy fell. The guy was probably happy to be alive when the cops eventually showed up.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Cars Sliding on Crazy Portland Ice
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Thursday, 1/18/2007 around 8PM EST by John  |  permalink
You have to feel kinda bad for some of car owners on this video, but man...that's some crazy ice in Portland. That red minivan is sliding entirely sideways without any noticable friction!

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Fresh Whole Rabbit at Amazon.com   $30
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Friday, 1/5/2007 around 9PM EST by John  |  permalink
This is NOT the bunny to get the kids for Easter. Yes, Amazon even sells this Fresh Whole Rabbit. Is "nutty aftertaste" a selling point? Check our the comedic user reviews, especially the one titled "This is how they get you".

Need more? Fill out your menu with this canned Exotic Meats Gift Set. Mmm...smoked rattlesnake.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Spanish Castle Illusion

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Ultimate Pwned Video
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Thursday, 9/21/2006 around 10PM EST by John  |  permalink
What do you get when someone pieces together hundreds of internet-famous (and otherwise) short clips of people being idiots, sports hits, and general cringe-worthy material? This video.

And when you've had enough of the accidents, cool down with this collection of people who narrowly avoided a few and are Lucky to Be Alive. Includes flipping rally cars. I bet one guy in there has planted a few trees to pay them back.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Mr. Angry Optical Illusion

Do you enjoy optical illusions? Here's a neat, quick one.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Sheets of Paper into 3D Art
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Saturday, 8/5/2006 around 9PM EST by John  |  permalink
This guy takes one standard A4 sheet of paper and uses scissors, glue, and a lot of folding to make it into 3D art, often with a side emphasis on the negative space left behind. The level of detail is amazing.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Wacky Statues From Around the World
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Monday, 7/24/2006 around 10PM EST by John  |  permalink
Here's an excellent photo collection of some interesting statues from around the world. Great stuff.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Making Life Easier
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Tuesday, 6/13/2006 around 10PM EST by John  |  permalink
I found this topic on Making Life Easier over at MetaFilter to be thought-provoking. As for me, I follow the Two Minute Rule (although I've yet to read the book). What time saving and life chilling techniques help you out on a regular basis?
  • "Two Minute Rule: if there's anything you absolutely must do that you can do right now in two minutes or less, then do it now, thus freeing up your time and mind tenfold over the long term."
Now, if you'll excuse me, I really should clean up all these slips of paper in front of my keyboard.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  High Pitched Ringtone
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Monday, 6/12/2006 around 8PM EST by John  |  permalink
Condensed version: Guy makes device to drive punk teens out of store with a high-pitched sound that most adults can't hear. Smart teen records sample and uses it as a "silent" ringtone.

Okay, so maybe I should have posted this when I first saw the story a month ago. But now that the New York Times did a writeup, there is an MP3 sample of the file. Even cooler is this link to a page of several high-pitched samples. Where does your hearing ability top out? Post your results in the Talk Back section. Oh, and have fun with your pets - my cat was looking curiously at the speakers during my trials.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Disease Makes Fibers Grow Out of Skin
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Saturday, 5/13/2006 around 12PM EST by John  |  permalink
Morgellans Disease sounds awful, almost like science fiction. Tiny hairlike fibers grow out of wounds and the skin feels like bugs are crawling around on it. It made me squirm just reading about it, so I thought I'd share. More images are at the Morgellons Research Foundation site.

nifty green arrowHMMM:  Audi Driver Survives Crash With Truck, Bus, Median
 Talk Back (0 comments)»  |  Saturday, 3/18/2006 around 1AM EST by John  |  permalink
If you haven't seen this video yet, take a look. This guy needs to stay out of casinos - I think he used up all his luck in a few seconds.
